UStar Editorial board at '09 TIPA contestClaire copy editing

I am majoring in general mass communication and minoring in psychology at Texas State University in San Marcos.

I have more than two years of experience working for the campus student-run publication that not only caters to the university community, but to city residents as well. I began working at The University Star at Texas State my freshman year as a copy editor and designer then worked my way into the role of copy desk chief. My in-depth knowledge in grammar, spelling and punctuation and recall of AP and local style is a strong contribution to the publication.

I am currently the managing editor, but the responsibilities and job description have been redone to be more of a resources position to suit the needs of the paper and utilize my abilities. The position was restored after a two-year absence because of the convergence and expansion of the Web site.

Working for The Star has shown me copy editing is my passion. I equate it to sculpting, while reporting is like painting. I like working with the content and story that is given and being that last line of defense for the reader. The experience has also convinced me I want to continue a journalism career at a local newspaper when I graduate.

I am very knowledgeable about Microsoft Word. I dabble in design and am knowledgeable about Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.

Here are I will post projects, writings and links for what I've done for a class, work, or completed for fun on my own.

My class writings and portfolio can be found on my blogspot.

My résumé and work can be also be found on my blogspot on the Portfolio blog.

Check out interviews a co-worker did for a fall '09 class. Working at The Star and being a student can be exhausting, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
